The Geopolitical Economist is an independent research platform on geopolitics and the world economy. It publishes analysis and research on how states use trade, energy, finance, technology and security policy as instruments of power, and on what those choices mean for markets, industries and households.
The work ranges from analysis of current developments to research briefs and papers, with data and evidence on the developments it follows. A weekly newsletter brings together the week’s lead analysis and the developments that matter.
Contributors are academics, analysts, practitioners and journalists, many of them writing from inside the regions they cover. Established specialists appear alongside new voices.
The publication’s epigraph, “In global geopolitics, truth is one, but the wise interpret it differently. Here, we interpret these diversions,” describes its approach. The facts of geopolitics are rarely in dispute; the interpretations are. The publication sets those interpretations out plainly, with the evidence for each, so that readers can weigh them for themselves.
The Geopolitical Economist was founded in 2023 as a publication on Medium, where it has some 35,000 followers. This website, launched in September 2026, is now its home. The publication is independently owned and accepts no payment in return for coverage. The views expressed in its articles are those of their authors.
